What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.

The course content is by Mental Health First Aid England. For a full breakdown of the two-day course visit the MHFA website.

What you’ll learn:

  • To recognise warning signs of mental ill-health and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone while keeping yourself safe.
  • How to empower someone to access the support they might need for recovery or successful management of their symptoms. This could include accessing mental health and crisis services, signposting to self-help resources or even support through someone’s GP.
  • An understanding of how to support positive wellbeing and tackle stigma in the world around you.

FAQs

Why is it important to invest in Mental Health First Aid?

Being trained as a Mental Health First Aider is as important as being trained in physical first aid.Although things are improving, stigma still exists around mental ill-health.

As a society, we tend not to look after our mental health like we do our physical health. This means we may not know how to support someone experiencing mental health problems, or where to go for help with our own mental health. This is something that MHFAs in the workplace can support with.

Support after qualifying

After becoming a MHFA, you’ll have access to continuous support, so you are confident, empowered and motivated to carry out your role.

This includes:

  • Three years’ access to support and benefits
  • 24/7 digital support through the MHFAider Support App®
  • Exclusive resources, ongoing learning opportunities and the benefit of joining England’s largest community of trained MHFAiders®
